Newcastle have the chance to enjoy dream end to incredible window

As far as summer transfer windows go I am struggling to think of a better one in terms of incomings for a long time at Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe has brought four senior signings to Newcastle this summer plus an exciting youngster in Yankuba Minteh who is out on loan at Feyenoord.

Sandro Tonali was the headline act and first through the door for the first-team transfers, costing £55million from AC Milan and brought in to add more quality to the midfield so that not every play has to go through Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle’s transfer window has been excellent so far

Harvey Barnes soon followed, another huge priority for Eddie Howe was to bring in a winger with an eye for goal and Howe had long been an admirer of Barnes. Allan Saint-Maximin was sold to Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli to make way and his sale freed up some more wiggle room with FFP.

Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall rounded out Newcastle’s incoming transfers to date, two of England’s post promising full-backs, both graduates of the Chelsea academy which has spewed out some top players over the years.

All in all, it’s a solid 8/10 window for me, but there’s one position where I feel we still need another body and that is the right-sided centre-back. We need another player in as cover for, to learn from and ultimately replace Fabian Schar. If we can get a young defender in for that position we’d have the most promising back-four in the game.

Unfortunately, all the rumours from inside and around the club suggest that Newcastle are now done with incoming transfers as they’re reached the limit of Financial Fair Play – of course this could just be spin to dampen expectations, especially as we now know the club has signed a big money deal with Adidas to return as kit supplier. Also the club today announced another long-term partnership with an online betting company.

Those deals will mean that Newcastle aren’t actually near the limit of FFP, but the club are likely just playing it safe knowing that the amortisation spans three years so they need to ensure there’s plenty left for future windows.

However, there are still three prominent players to get off the books at Newcastle in Ryan Fraser – now linked with a loan move to Empoli, Jeff Hendrick and Isaac Hayden. You can even add Javier Manquillo to that list.

Is there still time for another cheeky deal?

If the club are able to find new homes for those four players, they probably won’t bring in much cash in terms of transfer revenue, but what little they do bring in, combined with the freeing up of money on the wage bill, could tempt Newcastle into one last move to bring in that defender.

Edmond Tapsoba is valued at around £45million and remains on Newcastle’s wish list, so if Eddie Howe’s team are able to move on those four players, the reward could be another defender. There’s still space in the squad for one more incoming player.

While there’s definitely still scope for one more surprise incoming transfer, it may not be Tapsoba and it may not be a permanent deal, but there’s still time and I’m not counting us out just yet.
