Newcastle United have stepped up their interest in an iconic manager as they look for a potential replacement for Eddie Howe.

Howe has come under increasing pressure with the club lying in 10th in the Premier League and far away from the Champions League spots, though he’s been given a chance with the upcoming fixtures.

However, a new report from Le10sport now suggests that Newcastle are increasing their interest in Jose Mourinho who was very recently sacked by Roma.

Newcastle need to turn their form around

While it wouldn’t be a disaster to finish outside of the European spots, it would certainly be a step back for Newcastle who massively overachieved last season and raised the expectations.

Nobody, including the owners, really expected the Magpies to recapture the form they showed in the previous campaign, but there was an expectation to at least compete, something they haven’t done in the first half of the season.

Of course there are varying factors which have impacted Newcastle’s position, having to deal with more fixtures than ever and suffering an unexpected number of injuries to first-team players.

However, Howe must improve things in the second half of the season, beginning in February when the fixture list looks kinder, or he could very quickly be moved on and replaced by the former Man United and Chelsea man.

Newcastle don’t need a top manager

There’s been a lot of talk about Newcastle needing a top class manager if they are hoping to reach the very top of the footballing world, but that doesn’t have to be the case.

Howe is still a young and exciting manager who, when he has a fully fit team, is capable of playing exciting football which saw Newcastle reach the Champions League and a cup final for the first time in two decades.

If given time and more quality players in the summer, there’s every chance that the 46-year-old could repeat that feat and maybe even go one step further by winning some silverware.

As for Mourinho, the 60-year-old has seen suffered his three lowest winning percentages all at his last three clubs. The football world appears to have moved on and left the Portuguese icon behind, and it’s clear that even the Newcastle fans don’t want him anymore.
