Former Newcastle United striker Luuk de Jong had a Barcelona debut to forget.

The Dutchman started upfront for the Champions League opener against Bayern Munich, a tantalising fixture.

However, de Jong and his teammates spent most of the night chasing shadows.

The 31-year-old barely got a sniff of goal, which was a constant theme during his Toon loan spell back in 2014.

There was one moment in the first half where he was nearly through on goal, but his lack of pace and an offside flag put an end to proceedings.

The forward was bullied by Dayot Upamecano, who dominated at the back and ensured Barcelona didn’t even come close to scoring.

De Jong was taken off after 66 minutes, as Barcelona went on to lose 2-0 to the Bundesliga giants.

Bayern seemed to toy with the Catalans at times, and could have scored a lot more had they been more clinical in the final third.

Newcastle fans won’t be surprised by Luuk de Jong Barcelona debut

De Jong was signed by Newcastle in January 2014, arriving on loan for the rest of the season.

However, he failed to impress at St James’ Park.

In total, de Jong played 12 times in the Premier League and failed to score a single goal.

Since then he’s recovered, but it was still a real shock to see him join Barcelona this summer.

It just shows how much they have fallen due to their financial woes. From Lionel Messi to Luuk de Jong…

While we may joke, De Jong would certainly be welcome back at St James’ Park right now. Newcastle have their own crisis, with Callum Wilson out injured for the next few weeks.
