Newcastle United fans have been giving their reactions to the news of Dwight Gayle’s contract extension.
The striker was reported to have penned fresh terms earlier this year, but an official announcement never came – until today.
It had been thought Gayle had a new deal when he pictured training yesterday.
Today the club finally officially announced Gayle’s extension.
There new deals for Federico Fernandez and Jacob Murphy.
And Fabian Schar and Paul Dummett have had clauses triggered so that they will both stay for at least another season.
Interestingly, there is no mention of Andy Carroll.
Gayle getting an extension is definitely a little controversial.
The striker has struggled to score goals at Premier League level, and rarely featured last term despite Steve Bruce proclaiming to be a big fan of his.
It is not out of the question he could still be sold. Indeed, it was reported in May that the Magpies would sell if the right offer came in.
But realistically, he’ll be staying but.
Fans react to Gayle extension
Fans have been offering their takes on the situation, with many believing the move shows a lack of ambition.
Our club rewards mediocrity, Gayle should’ve been out the door 3 seasons ago, instead is rewarded with a new deal

Still can’t see the point in giving Gayle a new contract. We had only him fit at one point as a striker and he still couldn’t get a game. At least play him if we’re keeping him.

On new contracts..
Murphy: excelled at wing-back last season, good age & loves the club. No brainer
Fernandez: Mr. Dependable, great experience/pro, can play comfortably in a back 3 or 4
Gayle: injuries but still a good striker especially at Champ level. Could sell for £ #NUFC

Unless were signing Gayle to get money from a transfer for him then I feel like I’m stuck playing the same FIFA every year with #NUFC. https://t.co/xGChFwYduI

I mean, we signed Gayle for the Championship season so it’s astounding he’s still here… the rest are sound.
