The takeover figure has called for ‘immediate intervention’ for the club’s upcoming arbitration to be made public. It follows Thursday’s statement from owner Mike Ashley.

The 48-year-old has written to MP Tracey Crouch, who is chairing the fan-led review of football.

Staveley is part of a consortium hoping to buy Newcastle, which is made up of the Reuben Brothers and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

She wrote (via Chronicle): “A closely guarded lack of transparency from those responsible for the regulation of football does not generally promote good governance.

“In particular the use of arbitration to resolve disputes within football raises an effective shield against public scrutiny – and one might justifiably ask why that model is so favoured by those responsible for regulating the sport if they have nothing to hide.

“This is very much a chance for those involved to be seen to take a robust stance – just as the Government so decisively and effectively stepped into the European Super League debacle.

“But there is real urgency given the NUFC arbitration hearing is due to take place this month. We need intervention immediately to force the issue out into the open.”

The Chronicle say they have contacted the Premier League, who told them they would not be commenting on the letter to Crouch.

The letter comes after Staveley’s husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi had made a plea to Crouch on Twitter.

He wrote: “Delay tactics, zero transparency. Fans deserve better. @tracey_crouch please look into this.”

On social media supporters have been giving their reactions to Staveley’s letter.

Some feel the seemingly coordinated effort to put pressure on the Premier League means the situation is nearing its conclusion, one way or the other.

Staveley came in for praise from a few Toon supporters:
