One minute Kylian Mbappe is complaining about Newcastle being cold, the next he misses a penalty to knock France out of Euro 2020.
Monday was the most dramatic day of football in a long time.
It started with an eight-goal thriller between Croatia and Spain, with the latter making it through to the quarters after a 5-3 triumph.
Next it was France vs Switzerland – a game the world champions were expected to win with ease.
What transpired was out of this world.
France went behind. They weren’t at it. The tournament favourites were at risk of a humiliating early exit.
But they turned it on in the second half, with a brace from Karim Benzema and a stunner from Paul Pogba turning the game on its head.
But the Swiss weren’t finished. They rallied late on to complete an incredible comeback and take the game to extra time.
We even got to see an assist from former Magpie Kevin Mbabu, whose wonderful cross created Switzerland’s second goal.
Then it was extra time, with Newcastle defender Fabian Schar coming on for Switzerland.
An additional 30 minutes failed to provide a winner, meaning the first penalty shootout of Euro 2020 was about to take place.
Fabian Schar does what Kylian Mbappe can’t
The spot kicks were perfect. Schar was brave and stepped up for his country, and coolly converted from 12 yards.
With the score at 5-4 to Switzerland, Mbappe had to score. But it was saved.
The heir to Lionel Messi’s throne missed the penalty that saw France eliminated from Euro 2020.
It was a crushing moment for the PSG forward, but one that Newcastle fans have had some fun with.
Ever since the takeover saga of 2019 when the Bin Zayed Group tried to buy the club, fans have joked about Mbappe heading to St James’ Park.
While the forward has never been linked, it has been a running joke from supporters who are just desperate for Mike Ashley to sell the club.
The joke continued during PCP Capital Partners’ pursuit of the club, but once again Mbappe was never linked by the press.
But after his penalty miss at the Euros, some Toon fans are happy they didn’t sign Mbappe now – and hope any potential buyers steer clear of him. They’d rather keep Joelinton.
