While results haven’t gone his way, Eddie Howe has lifted Newcastle United.
The 44-year-old, alongside the new owners, is reuniting the fanbase after years of neglect from Mike Ashley.
We saw rotten football and a negative attitude from Steve Bruce, who talked the club down and went to war with the press.
Now we’ve got a Newcastle team that is playing on the front foot and a manager who speaks about Joelinton as if he’s the second coming of Diego Maradona.
Howe’s words and actions on the training ground are hitting all the right notes with Toon fans. But he still faces a huge task in keeping the club in the Premier League.
After failing to win any of their first 14 games, Newcastle will need to buck the trend and make history if they’re to stay in the top flight.
But Howe isn’t fazed, and his words in Friday’s press conference prove he is more than up for the fight.
“I’m realistic, but I’m also very, very positive,” Howe said.
“I know it’s going to be extremely difficult – if no team has done it, there’s a reason why they haven’t done it. That’s because it’s incredibly tough.
“But why not be the first? That’s always been my mindset. Why not change history? That’s what we’re going to have to do.
“We’re going to have to do it the hard way, but we’re more than capable.”
This is exactly what Toon fans want to hear. Howe isn’t being delusional – he accepts that it will be difficult. But there remains a belief that Newcastle can remain in the Premier League.
We need to start winning games first, starting with this afternoon against Burnley.
Regardless of what happens on the pitch, fans are believing in Howe, and absolutely love what he said on Friday morning.
