Newcastle fans’ Joelinton chant is dripping with irony – but he deserves the love

The Joelinton chant was belted out loud and proud on Saturday afternoon by Newcastle fans – very loud in fact.

It was the Brazilian who broke the deadlock for the Magpies, in a game that could’ve been tricky to navigate against 10 men.

But Joelinton rose highest to slam home Ryan Fraser’s cross with his head, netting his second goal of the season. Interestingly, both of his goals have came against Brentford. Sadly, we won’t be playing against them anymore this season.

It was a wonderful header by the 25-year-old, showing the desire to score a goal that has often been missing since his move to Newcastle. He certainly impressed club legend Alan Shearer with his performance, who described Joelinton as ‘impressive‘ on Match of the Day.

After his big money transfer in 2019, Joelinton is finally hitting the heights in a Toon shirt…and he only cost £40million!

Newcastle fans show their appreciation with Joelinton chant

When Joelinton’s header hit the back of the net, the first thing he did was run the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the travelling Toons fans. It was such a long sprint that the only Newcastle player to follow him was eventually Emil Krafth.

Joelinton showed his appreciation to the Toon Army. It was special that he made sure his celebration was all about the supporters.

And the feeling was mutual. In the minutes after the goal, Newcastle fans chanted Joelinton’s name time and time again.

‘He’s Brazilian, he only cost £40million…’. The irony begins. While his renaissance has been spectacular, it is heightened by how much he initially struggled in the North East.

“And we think he’s…brilliant’. We certainly do now, but that wasn’t the sentiment shortly after his arrival. Joelinton was a figure who provoked anger from the crowd, with each mistake met with a groan.

Nothing went right for Joelinton in the early days. But working with a new manager a shock change of position has led to a dramatic upturn in fortunes.

Joelinton deserves his chant. His hard work this season is to be applauded – rescuing a Toon career that looked doomed.

It might be dripping in irony, but perhaps that’s the point. It’s an appreciation of the renaissance, and long may it continue.
