Dan Ashworth might look back regrettably on his decision to leave Newcastle United this summer.

After the PIF takeover was completed in 2021, Newcastle United moved quickly to bring in Dan Ashworth as the sporting director for their long-term project.

Ashworth joined Newcastle in February 2022 and played a key role in recruitment alongside Eddie Howe, but he left just two years later to join Manchester United.

Newcastle collected £10m in compensation for Ashworth after months of negotiating with United. He spent months on gardening leave before joining the Red Devils in the summer.

Dan Ashworth leaves Man United after five months

If Newcastle supporters thought Ashworth’s time at St James’ Park was short-lived, his time at Old Trafford has come to an end after just five months.

According to The Athletic, United are set to part ways with Ashworth with owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe playing a ‘pivotal’ role in the decision.

Newcastle owners felt they had won when Ashworth left and they will feel even better about the decision after watching his nightmarish spell in Manchester unfold.

Newcastle fans mocked Ashworth for his blunders at United, especially after spotting he had previously sold transfer target Viktor Gyokeres for just £1m while in charge of Brighton.

Paul Mitchell replaced Ashworth as sporting director at Newcastle and while his start on Tyneside has been rocky, at least he is on track to last longer than five months.
