It has been four months since Dan Ashworth left his role at Newcastle United to join Manchester United.

Dan Ashworth joined Newcastle United in a sporting director role in 2022, less than a year after the PIF takeover was completed.

He was the club’s top-choice target to lead the long-term sporting project, with Newcastle paying £5m to Brighton to release him from his contract at the Amex Stadium.

However, Ashworth jumped ship this summer after Manchester United paid Newcastle £10m in compensation to appoint him.

Newcastle replaced Ashworth with Paul Mitchell as the sporting director this summer, but he is still yet to get going at St James’ Park.

Dan Ashworth made major Viktor Gyokeres blunder

Ashworth was bound to face criticism at Man United after spending close to £200m on new signings at Old Trafford this summer.

There is still a bitter taste in Newcastle fans’ mouths around Ashworth’s exit, but it seems they are getting the last laugh after it emerged that Ashworth made a big blunder during his time at Brighton.

Viktor Gyokeres has stolen headlines today after scoring a hat-trick in Sporting Lisbon’s 4-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League.

It has now emerged that Ashworth was a director at Brighton when the Seagulls chose to sell Gyokeres for just £1m to Coventry City.

Manchester United are now showing an interest in signing Gyokeres and Ashworth will likely have to fork out over £50m to sign the Swedish star after letting him slip through his fingers at Brighton.
