Manchester City reportedly want to sign Marc Cucurella – a player who Newcastle United bound Dan Ashworth knows very well.
The Daily Mail claim that Pep Guardiola’s side are interested in the Brighton defender. The report adds they want Cucurella to fill their problem position of left-back and will make a £30million move.
It’s a deal that would only make Manchester City stronger, with Erling Haaland already set to arrive this summer. He’ll make them an even more terrifying beast, with Alan Shearer predicting he’ll get 40 goals a season.
Signing Cucurella would be nowhere near as high profile, but Man City’s interest should vindicate Newcastle’s decision on who will be their new sporting director.
Dan Ashworth is heading to Newcastle
Dan Ashworth is set to join Newcastle United in the near future. A deal has already been agreed, but a compensation package is stopping him from starting work immediately at St James’ Park.
Instead, he may have to wait until November when his notice period ends.
That’s disappointing for Newcastle but not the end of the world. Ashworth is an appointment for the long-term future rather than the immediate present.
The 51-year-old has an incredible eye for talent and will play a key role in moulding the future of Newcastle United. His job will be to connect the entire club and ensure every department is pulling in the right direction.
He’s very well respected, and played an important part in the success England has had in recent years. He was director of elite development for the FA before joining Brighton in 2019.

One of those players was Cucurella, who joined Brighton last summer from Getafe. The Seagulls paid just £15million for the Spaniard, who’s proven to be one of the signings of the season.
The 23-year-old has played so well for Brighton that Manchester City reportedly want to sign him. That’s a big deal – they’re one of the best teams in the world today.
The fact they want to sign a player Ashworth brought to the Premier League has to be hugely encouraging for Newcastle. This is what awaits us when he’s eventually allowed to begin his job in the North East.
