Newcastle could now make January move for ‘outrageous’ PL player, he’s likely to leave

Newcastle could make an ambitious loan move for Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window.

Eddie Howe’s side were linked with the England international over the summer, but he remained at City.

Phillips has hardly featured under Pep Guardiola, and with the treble winners signing Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovacic in the summer window, his chances of potential minutes may have been even further reduced.

A report from INews has now claimed that unless his first-team opportunities dramatically increase, he will likely be allowed to leave on loan in January, and Newcastle is an ‘obvious’ destination for him, given their previous interest and a possible need for a defensive midfielder.

It is claimed that despite Newcastle’s interest in the summer, he was determined to fight for his place at City, but given that England will compete in the Euros next summer, he will push for a loan move in January if he is not playing, with his place in the team not guaranteed.

Do Newcastle need Phillips?

Despite the signing of Sandro Tonali in the summer, Phillips could add a lot to the Newcastle squad as a pure defensive midfielder.

Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have so far played as rotating defensive midfielders, but Newcastle have now lost three games in a row, and structural issues with the current midfield setup have been highlighted.

Having Phillips playing behind them could free the pair up to push forward more, and Phillips will bring a lot of Premier League and international experience from his days at Leeds United.

Although he has hardly featured for over a year, on his day Phillips is a top-class player, who was once described as “outrageous” by his teammate John Stones, and a loan could be a risk-free way of strengthening the squad for the second half of the season.
