Newcastle could repeat last year’s transfer success if the right ‘opportunity arises’ in January

Newcastle United could pull off a similar feat in the January transfer window as they did last season which proved to be a huge success.

Back in January 2023 Newcastle completed the signing of Anthony Gordon for £45m from Everton after being told that there wasn’t a big budget for the winter window.

A new report from the i claims that Newcastle could yet fast-track a big signing if the ownership deem it necessary in January, though it is still something they would like to avoid.

Newcastle can still spend big in January

All rumours surrounding Newcastle’s transfer business suggest that there is very little to spend, hence why they are exploring the loan market for players like Kalvin Phillips or free agents like David de Gea.

However, there is still a chance that they could repeat last year’s feat of bringing in a big money signing ahead of schedule after Gordon proved to be a big success when he eventually got up to speed with Eddie Howe’s style.

That’s not to suggest that it definitely will happen as the report still states that the owners are looking to remain patient despite the downward turn in form over the last month.

Should the amount of injuries begin to calm down and players start to return to the first-team then the hope is that they can see an improvement in the performances and finish the season on a positive note.

Newcastle need to improve across the pitch

It’s probably easier to list the positions that Newcastle won’t be looking to strengthen in January and the summer, even despite investing heavily in the last couple of years since the takeover.

If nothing else it shows just how poor the squad was when the new owners came in and how much work needed to be done just to get it up to Premier League standard, let alone challenging for the Champions League.

Howe has already identified three key areas in which he hopes to improve in January but there are sure to a be a number of positions he wants if he is still manager in the summer.

The biggest issue when everyone is fully fit and available is the lack of quality in depth and that will likely be the main focus as the club prepare for a huge season next year.
