Newcastle could make fresh move for midfielder compared to Frank Lampard

Attention is already turning to the January transfer window, it seems.

Newcastle United, despite FFP issues, managed to bring in four first-team signings over the course of the summer.

While it would be fair to say fans are yet to see the best of them, the insatiable nature of transfers in the modern game mean the links with players in January are starting.

Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz was touted as a potential target over the summer and there has now been a fresh update.

Indeed, according to talkSPORT, the Toon are one of a number of clubs keen on the 20-year-old.

His struggles for regular game time – having started only three Championship games this season – are believed to have been noted by those at St James’ Park.

Interestingly, the report shares that Newcastle made an enquiry for the player in the summer and that Eddie Howe remains an admirer of his talents.

Alcaraz has a lot to offer if Newcastle sign him

At 20, the Argentine certainly has room to develop.

While it’s strange to see him not command much of a starting berth on the south coast despite scoring four goals and registering two assists in his first half-season in the Premier League, that shouldn’t put Newcastle off.

Alcaraz was playing in a very poor team at the time and those are certainly impressive numbers.

Compared to Frank Lampard by South American football expert Tim Vickery, it’s a signing that would make a lot of sense.

“They’re [Southampton] getting an almost traditional English type of midfielder, in the sense of a central midfielder who times their run into the box very well, and he’s got a goal in him. He comes from the Frank Lampard and Bryan Robson school,” said Vickey to Sky Sports News in January.

“He’s only 20 but he’s an established star now, his last year was his real breakout year. He’s had three years in and around the first team at Racing, and has that gift of timing the run, ghosting into the box with a goal in him; that makes him very, very useful.”
