Kieran Trippier wasn’t the only Newcastle player to pick up an injury against Aston Villa – Javi Manquillo was also forced off early.
The Spaniard returned to the starting XI for the first time since the December draw with Manchester United, deployed at left-back due to Matt Targett’s ineligibility.
However, his afternoon was cut short due to injury. Manquillo leapt high in the air for a challenge with an Aston Villa player, but landed awkwardly.

After multiple attempts to carry on, he was eventually replaced by Paul Dummett before the referee blew for half time.
Manquillo was the first of two full-backs to be substituted against Villa, with Trippier forced off early in the second half. The club have provided an update on his situation, and it’s not good news.
The £12million man has fractured a bone in his foot and is set for a spell on the sidelines.

Newcastle need Javi Manquillo back from injury ASAP
While Trippier’s injury could rule him out for quite a few weeks, it looks like Manquillo’s woes are less severe.
Following the Trippier news, Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope provided an update on the Manquillo injury.
Regarding Manquillo, he wrote on Twitter yesterday: “More results are awaited but word this morning was that there is hope it’s not too serious.”
That is excellent news for the Magpies – losing our first and second choice right-backs in one game for a long period of time would have been devastating. However, it sounds like Manquillo’s injury layoff might not be too bad.

After the game, Eddie Howe feared he might have suffered ligament damage. Whether or not that’s the case remains to be seen.
The sooner the 27-year-old is back the better, as he is the natural replacement for Trippier. That’s a huge role to fill given the impact Trippier has had since he joined the club in January.
If Manquillo isn’t fit for next week, Emil Krafth will likely have to start at right-back against West Ham. Fortunately Targett will be available again, and seems certain to return to the left of defence.
