Newcastle are leading the race to sign ‘outrageous’ player in January despite rival interest

Newcastle United continue to be linked with a raft of midfielders ahead of the January transfer window.

It, however, won’t be quite as simple as that.

Indeed, not only are there FFP issues to contend with, Newcastle might have to beat off rival interest when it comes to signing players.

Take Kalvin Phillips for example. Strongly linked with a move to St James’ Park after failing to make the grade at Manchester City, the England international certainly looks a logical target.

Not getting into that City side, after all, is hardly a reason to be criticised. Pep Guardiola has even apologised for his lack of minutes, while teammate John Stones has previously hailed his passing range as “outrageous.”

With that in mind, it’s barely surprising to read of other teams interested in the midfielder. Juventus have been linked but, crucially, Newcastle could have something of an advantage.

According to TEAMtalk, the Italian giants would face a challenge in trying to convince Phillips to leave England at this stage.

Playing abroad isn’t said to be off the cards for him but, with Euro 2024 so close, hitting the ground running should he move to a new club is thought be a priority.

As such, Newcastle are said to remain the frontrunners.

Kalvin Phillips to Newcastle: Deal must be done quickly

Newcastle cannot afford to wait around for Phillips.

If he’s keen to leave City as reports have suggested he is, then there should be little holdup. Newcastle face a fight to make it back into the Champions League and could still have European football on the agenda after the New Year, so need their house in order rather than sagas dragging on.

The conditions look perfect for a quick-fire deal. Let’s hope that happens.
