A Newcastle United star has been praised by the national media after a ‘wonderful’ performance this weekend at Euro 2024.

The European Championships have started off with a bang this weekend, with hosts Germany putting Scotland to the sword 5-1 with entertaining games from Spain and Italy following since.

With England kicking off their tournament tonight against Serbia, the likes of Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier will be aiming for international silverware this summer, with the Three Lions one of the favourites for the competition.

And one Newcastle star has already put in an impressive display at the Euros.

Newcastle’s Fabian Schar praised after Switzerland performance vs Hungary

Switzerland kicked off their Euros campaign with an impressive 3-1 win against Hungary, with Newcastle’s Fabian Schar praised by the Swiss media for his performance in Cologne.

La Liberte hailed the Newcastle defender for his ‘very good’ display at the back for Switzerland, with Schar praised for his maturity in keeping a dangerous Hungary side at bay.

Blue Win went one step further, though, labelling the ‘wonderful’ Schar performance as ‘diligent and serious’, with the Newcastle star ‘annihilating’ the Hungary attack with ease.

Elsewhere, L’Equipe were particularly generous with Schar’s display, with the French sports daily noting the defender’s ‘total’ presence at the back, as well as his calmness when faced with an opposing player.

Schar already back to his best after end-of-season injury

Having suffered a hamstring problem in the final matches of the Premier League season, it didn’t take long for Schar to return to his best on one of the biggest stages of all in the Euros.

The defender was simply brilliant on Saturday against Hungary, with Switzerland again showing their credentials as a team to look out for in this summer’s competition.

And if Schar can keep up this level of performance, the 32-year-old will return to Newcastle later this summer more in form than ever, with the defender set for a big year under Eddie Howe.
