One Newcastle United player in particular has heavily impressed Micky Quinn despite a Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund.
There was not a lot to be excited about for Newcastle fans as the team’s 20-year-long wait for an away goal in the Champions League continued on Tuesday night.
Newcastle legend Micky Quinn spoke on talkSPORT about Valentino Livramento’s impressive performance against the German side and what Newcastle have to look forward to.
Livramento had been the one shining light in what was otherwise a disheartening game of football for black and white supporters.
Micky Quinn praises Livramento after Newcastle’s defeat to Dortmund
The £32m summer signing has probably been Newcastle’s man of the match every time he’s started a game this season.
The former Southampton man was given the award for his displays against Manchester City and Manchester United and although Newcastle fell to a defeat on Tuesday, Livramento was quite easily their best performer.
His pace and crossing ability make him a great attacking threat, but his defensive qualities are also very impressive and make him a perfectly balanced right-back, very similar to Kieran Trippier.
Micky Quinn was blown away by how good Livramento was on the night and believes Newcastle have secured one for the future.
Speaking after the game, Quinn said, “Look, I’ve got faith in Eddie, I’ve got faith in the system that he’s playing.
“Some cracking young lads, Livramento, what a cross that was for Joelinton’s header, my goodness!
“If you look at the game last night, he played right-back, he played left-back, and he’s got so much pace and he crossed that ball like I said for Joelinton, he’s got everything the kid and way ahead of schedule.”
The future is bright for Newcastle
There have been some frustrations in recent weeks amongst the fanbase regarding Newcastle’s summer window. Many believed that the club should have bought ready-made starters, rather than potential stars.
With the current injury crisis, fans argued that it was a huge mistake not to immediately improve the starting 11.
But in buying the likes of Livramento and Lewis Hall, who have both looked quality despite Hall’s shaky start against Dortmund, Newcastle have likely secured a top defensive pairing for the next decade.
Combining this duo with the likes of Alexander Isak, Sven Botman and Joe Willock who are all 24 or younger and you’ve got a very exciting young core with bags of potential.
Many may have also forgotten that Sandro Tonali, who is 23-years-old, still has his best years ahead of him and will be a huge player for Eddie Howe once he returns from his 10-month suspension.
