Michael Owen’s eyebrow-raising Newcastle United prediction is now looking scarily accurate

Former Newcastle United star Michael Owen made a bold prediction before the Premier League season kicked off.

It is fair to say Michael Owen is not the most liked person on Tyneside after his role in Newcastle’s relegation in 2008/09.

Alan Shearer recently joked about his relationship with Owen which turned frosty after their fall out at St James’ Park 15 years ago.

Owen was Newcastle’s record signing at £17m, but his time at Newcastle did not go down well with supporters. Since hanging up his boots in 2013, Owen has entered the world of football punditry.

Where Michael Owen predicted Newcastle United to finish

There were a lot of mixed emotions from the Newcastle fanbase heading into the season on the back of what was a very underwhelming summer transfer window.

Newcastle finished seventh in the Premier League table last season after overcoming their injury woes and hectic Champions League scheduling.

Eddie Howe’s side narrowly missed out on European qualification due to Manchester United’s FA Cup success, but the silver lining was that Newcastle could put their full focus on the league this season.

With that in mind, Owen predicted via the Premier League that Newcastle will finish fifth this season – narrowly missing out on a return to the Champions League.

Newcastle are currently eighth in the table after 11 games played but are only one point off Chelsea in third.

It means Owen’s prediction is very much on track, and he boldly predicted that the Magpies would finish ahead of both Manchester United and Tottenham.

An eyebrow-raising prediction for sure, but one that is currently true with Newcastle currently above Manchester United in 13th and Spurs in 10th.

Eddie Howe set Premier League target by Newcastle chiefs

Newcastle’s meteoric rise to Champions League qualification in 2022/23 was always going to be difficult to replicate, but Howe is expected to qualify for Europe this season in what will be his third full campaign as manager.

Club chiefs want Newcastle to return to continental football, which means seventh is the lowest Howe can afford to finish this season unless qualification is achieved through winning a trophy.

If that was the case, a poor league finish would quickly be forgiven.

Achieving qualification will also be essential for ongoing contract talks with Alexander Isak demanding European football to sign a new deal at St James’ Park.

The race for Europe is still incredibly tight at the moment but Newcastle are in great form heading into the November break after winning three consecutive matches.
