Michael Owen says there’s something people have completely wrong about him and Newcastle

Michael Owen is not a name many Newcastle United fans will remember particularly fondly.

While he arrived at Newcastle in 2005 as a hero, the former England striker’s time at St James’ Park was not a happy one.

Though Owen did score 30 goals in 79 appearances for the club, the sheer number of games he missed due to injury meant it proved a frustrating four years at Newcastle.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, some of his comments in the years since have not gone down well. He confirmed he didn’t necessarily want to move to the club from Real Madrid, instead wanting to rejoin boyhood club Liverpool.

Now, however, Owen has told Simon Jordan how he really feels about Newcastle.

Michael Owen makes U-turn on Newcastle comments

Speaking on Jordan’s Up Front Podcast, Owen insisted he loves Newcastle and looks back on some “unbelievable” times while clad in black and white.

“There is a misconception that I, obviously in my book I wrote some things which probably have fuelled it, but of course people will take lines out and not listen to the rest of it,” he said.

“I love Newcastle. I love the people. I lived there for four years. We had some unbelievable times up there, really unbelievable.

“Playing alongside Alan Shearer was a big draw. Playing for Graeme Souness was a big draw, I looked up to him, when I was coming through at Liverpool he was the manager. And the fan base, the passion, I thought get them back into the Premier League that’s where I belong.”

Michael Owen: Newcastle feeling will never change

No matter what Owen says about his time at Newcastle, there will always be an element of ill-feeling.

Having publicly fallen out with Alan Shearer, there is little coming back.

Though its certainly interesting to hear his side of the story and, in fairness, there’s little he can do about some of the injuries, it feels like too little late.
