Newcastle United are next in action against Brighton And Hove Albion on Saturday, but some attention has already shifted to the following game.

In the Magpies’ penultimate game of the Premier League season, they travel to Old Trafford to take on a Manchester United side that are fighting with them for a place in Europe.

Newcastle United are suddenly the favourites, and took control of sixth position at the weekend. Eddie Howe’s side breezed past Burnley to win 4-1, while Man United were embarrassed 4-0 by Crystal Palace. Chelsea are the biggest threat, having found form and jumped above the Red Devils in the Premier League table.

Newcastle United have confidence while Man United falter

Eddie Howe knows that a top six finish will be enough to bring European football back to St James’ Park next season, and it has always looked like it could come down to the game against Man United ever since it was rescheduled.

It is going to be a huge game at Old Trafford, and one that Newcastle are probably going to be favourites for. The Magpies have won both meetings between the two sides this season, and will go into the game with a lot more confidence.

Newcastle are finding an extra gear at the business end of the season, while Man United look like they are desperate for the campaign to come to an end.

Michael Owen makes Man United vs Newcastle prediction

Man United are playing very poorly right now, leading to suggestions that Erik ten Hag will lose his job. He is expected to remain in his position at Old Trafford until the end of the season, but Michael Owen has suggested that the Dutchman might not win any of his remaining games.

Owen has spoke to Optus Sport about Ten Hag and Manchester United, and has predicted their final four games of the season – including the clash with Newcastle on May 15th.

“They’re going to get absolutely hammered by Manchester City [in the FA Cup final] – annihilated,” he said.

“In fact, Arsenal will smash them to bits at Old Trafford. Newcastle will probably beat them. I wouldn’t even fancy them going to Brighton either.

“They might not get anything out of the rest of the season if they’re playing like that.”

Magpies must focus on Brighton first

Owen thinks Newcastle will probably triumph over Man United next Wednesday night, but Eddie Howe will not be worrying about that fixture just yet.

The Toon boss always takes it one game at a time, which means all his attention will be on facing Brighton on Saturday.

It is the Magpies’ final home game of the season, and Howe will want his players to put on a show. He could also have Kieran Trippier back, with the 33-year-old pencilled in for a return against the Seagulls.

Heading into the game, Brighton are not in great form. They have won just one of their previous seven Premier League games – with their only win coming against Aston Villa on Sunday.
