Micah Richards tells England players exactly what Newcastle’s Fabian Schar ‘does not want’ to do

Newcastle United could be well-represented when England meet Switzerland at Euro 2024 on Saturday.

Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon are both options for the Three Lions, even if Gareth Southgate has used the Newcastle winger in particular very sparingly.

Indeed, it’s not only on the English side where onlookers could see a Newcastle star strut his stuff.

Fabian Schar, one of Eddie Howe’s key players since taking over at St James’ Park, will almost certainly start at the back for the Swiss.

The 32-year-old has been praised for his performances in Germany and even played through a broken nose, such is his commitment to the cause.

He will be one of the key players tasked with stopping the likes of Harry Kane, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham when the two clash in Dusseldorf.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, Richards talked up Schar but pointed out that being dragged wide could be a successful avenue for England to exploit.

“If I’m looking at this England team now and you’ve got [Fabian] Schar – and Schar’s a very good player – but he does not want to be going into wide areas of the pitch,” he said.

In fact, he even suggested Gordon should start for that very reason: “He has to play [Bukayo] Saka or Cole Palmer on the right and he has to start with [Anthony] Gordon.

“On transition, once you beat their press, you can hurt them. And I’ve seen videos of it.”

One of the main beneficiaries of Howe’s appointment in 2021, it’s fantastic to see Schar get the plaudits he deserves.

Howe has talked about just how unique a player Schar is, claiming he’s a resolute defender who boasts the kind of long-range passing few in his position can match.

Also capable of scoring from long range as Newcastle fans have seen time and time again, England will not have it easy up against Schar.

Perhaps dragging him wide and out of position would work but he’s hardly an inexperienced player who will go racing around the pitch.

He’s simply too good for that.
