What is so good about Newcastle United this season is the fact there is no true superstar.
Clearly, Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Joelinton have all had their moments this season, while Alexander Isak’s recent form has been fantastic to see.
There are many more to mention of course but the point is that Eddie Howe has built a squad more than anything. He has improved the players he inherited, making money spent by previous Newcastle managers go further.
Joe Willock is a prime example.
Indeed, things are getting to the point where the 23-year-old is arguably playing better football than he did on that ludicrous scoring run he embarked on after first arriving on loan from Arsenal in 2021.
Excellent in the statement win over Manchester United on Sunday, Willock opened the scoring and has since been lavished with praise.

Indeed, speaking on the BBC’s 5 Live Sport podcast, pundit Micah Richards said: “Willock was absolutely sensational. Guimaraes was wonderful as well.
“And Eddie Howe has got them playing with a different belief. Newcastle are outstanding and I hope it continues.
How well did Willock play against Manchester United?
Willock was simply stunning.
According to WhoScored data, he led the way for shots (6), shots on target (2) and dribbles (3). From a defensive point of view, the fact he ranked fifth for both tackles (2) and interceptions (1) says so much about Willock’s all-action presence.
Though he squandered two great chances, Willock did not let his head drop.
Surely at some point Gareth Southgate has to consider him as part of the England squad.
The Three Lions aren’t exactly blessed with central midfielders and Willock has been a standout for one of the most compelling teams in the Premier League this season.
