Marc Guehi could have been a Newcastle United player right now.
The Magpies tried desperately hard to sign the centre-back last summer, with Paul Mitchell attempting to strike a deal with Crystal Palace.
In the end, Newcastle United missed out on Marc Guehi. They were unwilling to meet Crystal Palace’s asking price, which resulted in Marc Guehi remaining at Selhurst Park.
It also resulted in Eddie Howe sticking with the centre-backs he already had, with Dan Burn and Fabian Schar starting alongside each other.

Marc Guehi praises Dan Burn
They have played very well, particularly Dan Burn. That is the view of Guehi, who sat on the bench on Friday night as Burn made his England debut against Albania.
Guehi then played in England’s 3-0 win over Latvia before admitting to the Evening Standard that he needs to work harder to ensure he regularly gets in the Three Lions’ starting XI ahead of a player like Burn.
“It’s part of football,” he said.
“Obviously disappointed [to be on the bench vs Albania], but we’ve got a lot of good centre-backs. Dan [Burn] has been doing extremely well at Newcastle, Ezri [Konsa] has been playing well. Levi [Colwill] obviously didn’t get on.
“It just means I need to work a lot harder to make sure the manager sees me in his plans. Not pressure, just motivation.”
Guehi and Burn could still become Newcastle United teammates
Burn thoroughly deserved his first England appearance. It capped off a remarkable few days, after Burn scored in the Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool.
But as Newcastle begin to make plans for the 2025/26 campaign, it is unclear what Burn’s role will be next season.
Sven Botman will be fully fit by then, while Newcastle are looking to sign another centre-back after missing out last summer.
Interestingly, it has been claimed by the Telegraph that Newcastle are still interested in signing Guehi.
He looks destined to move this summer, as he gets set to enter the final 12 months of his Crystal Palace contract. That will likely result in a transfer away from Selhurst Park, which could give Newcastle a fresh chance to snap up the 24-year-old.
If that happens, Guehi and Burn will be teammates at club level as well as for England.
