It seemed as though talk of Sean Longstaff joining Manchester United was over, but Friday brought a fresh update.
The Mirror reported that the Red Devils are confident about securing a £25million deal for the midfielder, who broke into the Newcastle team during the second half of last season.
The report led with the headline: “Man Utd closing on £25m Sean Longstaff transfer as Red Devils look to sign Newcastle star”, which made things sound like a deal is close.
But the article then downplayed things slightly, stating that Manchester United are “confident they can clinch a £25million deal”. So which is it? Are they closing in or are they just confident they can sign him?
How can you be closing in on a deal for a player if you haven’t contacted the club he plays for? And how come Newcastle will comment on this but have nothing to say about Rafa Benitez or the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the ownership of the club?
Either way, Newcastle fans have every right to be concerned. But what about the Manchester United faithful? What do they make of the reports that they could be signing a player likened to Michael Carrick? They weren’t too keen when their interest was first reported…
Manchester United fans react to reports of £25m move for Longstaff
Sean Longstaff is a good, young player but id rather have Declan Rice. But I think theres better value out there abroad. Not every signing has to be British. Would I sign Eric Dier? No thanks. This is where proper scouting pays dividends. #MUFC

I this what we’ve become? Signing bang average players because Ole wants brexit fc. If this happens. 10th or worse next season

Have watched him a fair bit, would be very surprised if he makes that much of a difference to united to be honest, not sure it’s the kind of signing we need, Neves on the other hand

🇾🇪Sean Longstaff to #mufc for £25M would be a high-value signing.
• Low risk, high reward
• Tons of upside [21 years old]
• Correct mentality & work-rate
• Knows the league
