The rumour came as a shock, because with all due respect to the young midfielder, he isn’t going to fix the problems at Old Trafford. Manchester United are in a real mess and this is a crucial summer for them.
They’ve been linked with a lot of young players, meaning they’re clearly thinking about the future. So from that perspective, Longstaff isn’t a bad target for them. In his brief Premier League career, he’s shown he has all the tools to be a real success.
He’s even been likened to a former Manchester United midfielder, Michael Carrick.
Newcastle can’t afford to lose the academy product, so reports that Longstaff isn’t for sale and is happy at the club are good to see.
Toon fans did poke a bit of fun at the Red Devils, comparing the 21-year-old to Alan Shearer, who famously turned down Manchester United in 1996.
While some are positive, most Manchester United fans aren’t keen on Longstaff
I’ve spent 5 minutes watching YouTube clips of Sean Longstaff and I’m convinced he is the next Keane, Scholes and Carrick rolled in to one and we’ll comfortably make up 30 points on City with him in the side

He’s a good young player and would be a decent Herrera replacement. We definitely could do better but still

Not sure about Longstaff, a good half of a season at Newcastle and think he’s overhyped because he’s a Geordie, decent player but we have Scott McSauce🤷♂️#MUFC

A few years back, we were trying to sign Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale. Now we’re after the likes of Sean Longstaff? No disrespect but what is happening to this club? #mufc

If we sign Sean Longstaff over Wilfred Ndidi, our club has officially hit rock rock bottom #MUFC

The problem with James & Longstaff isn’t that they’re young cheap english players, because there are so many of them that I would be happy for us to sign.
It’s the fact they’re terrible and are likely being signed based on age and nationality over actual quality. #MUFC

Longstaff will be back in black and white
Some Manchester United fans have welcomed the reported interest in the Geordie midfielder, but most of the opinions are pretty scathing.
It’s a good job he’s happy where he is then.
Longstaff will hopefully be fit for the start of the season after injury brought his debut campaign to a premature end. He looked great at the heart of Newcastle’s midfield, playing a huge role in the win against the biggest side in Manchester.
Manchester United fans might not be keen, but that’s their problem. Even if they did want him, Longstaff’s future is at St James’ Park.
