Sky Sports reported on Friday that Manchester United are interested in a summer move for Sean Longstaff.

The rumour came as a shock, because with all due respect to the young midfielder, he isn’t going to fix the problems at Old Trafford. Manchester United are in a real mess and this is a crucial summer for them.

They’ve been linked with a lot of young players, meaning they’re clearly thinking about the future. So from that perspective, Longstaff isn’t a bad target for them. In his brief Premier League career, he’s shown he has all the tools to be a real success.

He’s even been likened to a former Manchester United midfielder, Michael Carrick.

Newcastle can’t afford to lose the academy product, so reports that Longstaff isn’t for sale and is happy at the club are good to see.

Toon fans did poke a bit of fun at the Red Devils, comparing the 21-year-old to Alan Shearer, who famously turned down Manchester United in 1996.

While some are positive, most Manchester United fans aren’t keen on Longstaff

Some Manchester United fans have welcomed the reported interest in the Geordie midfielder, but most of the opinions are pretty scathing.

It’s a good job he’s happy where he is then.

Longstaff will hopefully be fit for the start of the season after injury brought his debut campaign to a premature end. He looked great at the heart of Newcastle’s midfield, playing a huge role in the win against the biggest side in Manchester.

Manchester United fans might not be keen, but that’s their problem. Even if they did want him, Longstaff’s future is at St James’ Park.
