Through no fault of their own, Newcastle United’s summer transfer business is looking poorer and poorer with each passing week.
First the Magpies lost Harvey Barnes to a long-term injury. He is expected to be out of action until 2024.
That was a huge blow, and it became even more miserable when Sandro Tonali’s ban for betting was confirmed. The 23-year-old will now not play again for Newcastle until August 2024.
Newcastle‘s two most expensive signings of the summer are unavailable, while the other two recruits are merely reserves.
It is nobody’s fault, but suddenly Newcastle have nearly £100million worth of summer signings just unable to play. It is a difficult situation for Eddie Howe, which must be all the more painful to stomach given how well some of the Magpies’ other transfer targets are performing.
And one of those is Dominik Szoboszlai.

Newcastle wanted to sign Dominik Szoboszlai
The 23-year-old signed for Liverpool during the summer transfer window. They bought him from RB Leipzig for £60million, activating his release clause to bring him to Anfield.
They beat Newcastle to his signature, with the Magpies huge fans of the Hungary international. However, Newcastle actually decided that signing Szoboszlai was not essential, which is why they moved for Sandro Tonali instead.
The Magpies missed their chance, and Liverpool swooped in to sign a man who has enjoyed a breathtaking start to the 2023/24 season.
Szoboszlai impresses for Liverpool against Forest
Szoboszlai has immediately become a key player for Jurgen Klopp, and he got his first Premier League assists during Sunday’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
He set up Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah during the emphatic victory, as Liverpool look to keep pace near the top of the Premier League.
Szoboszlai’s efforts are a key reason why they are challenging for the title, and his manager Jurgen Klopp was very happy with his latest performance on Sunday.
“The boy is a joy to watch with how much he loves to play and how mature he is on the pitch with two assists,” he told BBC Sport.
“You need players that understand the game and he definitely does.”
While Newcastle thought that Tonali was a better buy that Szoboszlai this summer, the Hungarian has proved time and time again why he would have been a magical addition to this Toon squad. He has already had a seismic impact at Liverpool, while we are yet to see Tonali truly flourish in a black and white shirt. And now we won’t see him again until next season.
