Newcastle United picked up a big victory on Wednesday night, hammering Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League.

Eddie Howe suffered defeat to Barcelona in Newcastle’s first game of the Champions League league phase.

Newcastle hit back against Union Saint-Gilloise, though, racking up a thumping 4-0 victory in Belgium.

Anthony Gordon scored two penalties, while summer signing Nick Woltemade and winger Harvey Barnes also found the net.

Malick Thiaw sends message to Newcastle United fans

Newcastle came home with all three points after a brilliant performance and will look to take momentum into this weekend’s game against Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle supporters showed their love for Malick Thiaw in Brussels, and the German has returned the favour.

Thiaw has taken to his Instagram story to send a message to supporters, who chanted his name passionately after the full-time whistle.

‘My heart is full of love for you Geordies’ said Thiaw, alongside two love heart emojis.

Newcastle only signed Thiaw from AC Milan in August, but he has already made a big impact on Tyneside.

The £34million defender has certainly shown enough to suggest that he can be a huge player both this season and beyond.

Thiaw faces competition in the Newcastle back line, but he has certainly made a strong start to his Magpies career.

Malick Thiaw’s World Cup hopes in danger

Woltemade is making a big impact for Newcastle and has been named in the Germany squad to face Luxembourg and Northern Ireland.

Thiaw has been left out, though, and his World Cup hopes may be fading away.

The Newcastle defender has played three times for Germany, but his last appearance came in 2023.

Not only has Thiaw been snubbed by Julian Nagelsmann, but other defenders – such as Nnamdi Collins and Yann Aurel Bisseck – have been called up more recently.

Thiaw can only hope that his Newcastle displays impress Nagelsmann, but with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, his hopes are fading fast.
