‘Magnificent’ Newcastle man not pushing for transfer despite interest

Newcastle United is a good place to be right now.

The club are back in the Champions League and have so much to look forward to following a busy summer on the transfer front.

While Eddie Howe was not one to tinker too much last time out, there is a real chance for Newcastle’s squad players to make an impact this season.

With FFP constraints limiting what the club can do in the transfer market, an increased schedule by way of European qualification offers the opportunity for more game time for those who didn’t get a look in last year.

That is of particular interest when it comes to Jamaal Lascelles. Reportedly attracting interest from Turkish giants Besiktas, it seems Newcastle have other ideas.

Indeed, The Chronicle have offered up some fresh insight.

They claim Newcastle have resisted interest in the 29-year-old as they look to keep their squad big enough to battle across a number of fronts.

Despite making only two Premier League starts last season, the former Nottingham Forest defender is said to be keen to stay at St James’ Park and will not push for a move.

Eddie Howe has talked up Jamaal Lascelles this summer

Whatever you feel about the idea of Lascelles stepping in to cover Sven Botman or Fabian Schar in terms of quality, Howe has already been hugely complimentary of the player.

During the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, the Newcastle manager interrupted a press conference to describe Lascelles as “an unbelievable captain” and stressed that he had a “magnificent” attitude.

Clearly someone the manager rates and with a new defender seemingly unlikely to come in before the window shuts, keeping Lascelles makes sense.

An upgrade may well be sought in the future but, for now, he looks set to stay.
