Newcastle transfer news: Toon could make third James Maddison bid

Newcastle United have had two offers rejected by Leicester for James Maddison, leaving the Magpies to ponder whether or not to make a third bid.

And i News claim that it is something Eddie Howe and co are considering. They state that Newcastle are yet to rule out making another improved offer for the 25-year-old.

It will need to be a huge offer to tempt the Foxes into selling, as Maddison is one of their star players. The first offer was £40million, and the second was £50million.

The midfielder is being implored to move to Newcastle, but the decision doesn’t lie with him.

Both bids were turned down by Brendan Rodgers’ side, who want £60million for the England international. However, Leicester are currently in a vulnerable position.

Leicester need to sell with Fofana also linked with exit

They need to sell to buy this summer, meaning they are at risk of losing some incredibly talented players. One of those is Maddison, and another is Wesley Fofana.

The French defender is being linked with Chelsea, who have had a £60million bid rejected. It’s been claimed that Leicester want £80million for his services.

If a compromise can be reached then Fofana will be on his way to Stamford Bridge. And that will likely end all hope of Maddison heading to St James’ Park.

If Newcastle are to get their man, they need to put more money on the table, and they need to do it soon before Chelsea close in on Fofana.

If Newcastle make a third Maddison bid, it needs to be structured differently

i News state that Newcastle are not going to overspend on targets this summer. However, the way they structure a deal might have to change.

The Magpies have been offering structured deals all summer, which would see the club spread the payments over a longer period of time. It means that financial fair play isn’t as impacted, and that the current transfer budget can go further.

However, that’s not going to appeal to Leicester. They want big money for their star man, and they want it now. Rodgers, who says Maddison is ‘immense‘, needs the money to reinvest it into his squad right now, which is why more money up front is favourable.

Until Newcastle structure a deal in which Leicester receive most of the money up front, it feels highly unlikely that Maddison will be on his way to the North East.

It all depends how badly the Magpies want him. We are desperate to add more goals to the team, and he would certainly bring that.

His numbers last season were incredible, getting 20 goals and assists in the Premier League. That’s twice as many as our most creative player Allan Saint-Maximin, who managed 10.

But a third offer is being considered. Hopefully it’s enough to satisfy Leicester’s needs.
