Newcastle United look to be on the verge of losing Dan Ashworth to Manchester United and there are rumours that Michael Edwards could be in line to replace him.

Ashworth is believed to be keen on the move, leaving Newcastle in a difficult position where they will have to quickly identify an ideal replacement, and Edwards name as cropped up more than once.

However, journalist Luke Edwards has now claimed that Michael Edwards has no interest in taking up a new role at a football club after leaving Liverpool and rejecting offers from both them and Chelsea.

How Edwards feels about joining Newcastle

Edwards left Liverpool in the summer of 2022 and rejected an offer to return to the Reds just last month as he is keen to continue growing his own personal business and has no interest in re-joining a football club.

This will be a bit of a blow for Newcastle who may have been hoping Edwards could be the ideal replacement for Ashworth given his experience working for a Champions League club.

For the Geordies, the search will continue as it looks like Ashworth is quite keen on leaving to join Old Trafford even despite the fact he could be placed on a 12-month gardening leave period.

Newcastle’s biggest task is finding someone like Edwards who has previous history in working at a top football club as they won’t want to risk hiring an inexperienced director who may undo all the good work Ashworth has already laid down.

On social media, Luke Edwards said: “Michael Edwards has already turned down sporting director jobs at Liverpool and Chelsea and is thought to no longer be interested in this type of work. Would appear to be a long shot for #nufc as well.”

What some people may be forgetting is that Newcastle, despite their position in the Premier League, have the richest owners in world football and are a very exciting project for almost everyone involved in the sport.

Losing someone like Ashworth who is very talented in his field is certainly a big blow, but it’s not like the days under Mike Ashley where they would have to rely on getting lucky with the next unknown signing.

Now, Newcastle will have an endless list of people applying for the role who have an extensive history in the sport and the Magpies will effectively be able to seek out their favourite or who they think is best suited to the club.

Regardless of who they choose, supporters should find comfort in the fact that they’ve gotten most decision spot on since the takeover in 2021 and the club will almost certainly be in good hands.
