Looking back at Wilder’s comments on Newcastle from June 2020

Chris Wilder would reportedly be interested in the Newcastle job if Steve Bruce was sacked.

Wilder has been out of work since he left Sheffield United in March.

He took them into the Premier League and to 9th in their first season back before things unraveled last term.

Wilder hasn’t become a bad coach overnight and he has actually already made it clear what he thinks of Newcastle.

Ahead of a clash between the Blades and Newcastle in June 2020, Wilder showed he ‘gets it’.

As per Press Association, he said: “Everybody in football loves that from when Kevin Keegan was manager and the unbelievable success that he had there, how he galvanised that football club and showed the world what a brilliant football club it is.

“I’ve got a close friend who played there for a number of years, John Beresford, and every time we meet up, we always talk about his time there, off the pitch how it was.

“The passion that they showed towards the players, the demands they put on the players and him playing in that team with the likes of David Ginola and Alan Shearer.

“The list is endless, and what a brilliant time it was for them. I’m sure they’re desperate for success; they’ve been starved of it at a different level.”

It’s clear that Wilder doesn’t just want Newcastle because he’s out of work and wants to get back in.

He has an understanding of the demands at the club and clearly understands the size of it too.

The big issue would be control. Wilder left Sheffield United amid a wrangle over the control of transfers and such like.

Would he really accept working at Newcastle under the conditions we all know Mike Ashley enforces? That’s the big question and the answer doesn’t seem like it will come soon with Bruce safe in his role as it stands.
