It was a case of one step forward and two steps back for Newcastle United on the fitness front on Saturday.

While Sven Botman finally made his return from injury much to the delight of his teammates, Newcastle were dealt two more problems.

Indeed, Eddie Howe confirmed that injuries to Fabian Schar and Joelinton don’t look “good” in the short-term.

With a Carabao Cup quarter-final away at Chelsea to come on Tuesday, it hardly makes for ideal reading.

Two such key players to the set-up potentially missing a crucial game – one Howe needs to win to keep morale high following exit from European competition – would be a real worry.

Now, however, a positive update has emerged.

Newcastle injury news: Fabian Schar and Joelinton latest

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle have been handed at least some reprieve.

While it remains to be seen if either Schar or Joelinton will be able to play at Stamford Bridge in just a few days’ time, Hope provided an update on X, formerly Twitter.

“Fabian Schar (glute) & Joelinton (hamstring) not thought to be serious but look like being short-term absentees at least for NUFC,” he wrote.

Newcastle injuries: Problems keep piling

As Howe admitted after the game, it was tempting to think Newcastle were through the worst of their crisis.

With Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Callum Wilson and Botman all coming back into action of late, there appeared to be light at the end of the tunnel.

Still, as is seemingly the case every week, problems keep piling.

While Lewis Miley impressed after replacing Joelinton, the situation surrounding Schar is more pressing. In an ideal world, Botman would be eased back into action but a lack of options behind the Swiss make that hard to imagine, particularly with such a big game in mind.
