Liverpool suffer fresh injury scare ahead of facing Newcastle United next week

Newcastle United’s next home game is against Liverpool, with the St James’ Park floodlights set to get another run out.

The Magpies take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday, then face a quick turnaround for their next game.

The following Wednesday, Newcastle United face Liverpool at St James’ Park, as Arne Slot’s Premier League leaders prepare to head to Tyneside.

Liverpool are now in the midst of a gruelling run of fixtures. They beat Real Madrid on Wednesday night, before facing Manchester City on Sunday. Then it is Newcastle on Wednesday night followed by Everton in the Merseyside derby.

It is a tough run for the Reds, and Jamie Carragher has suggested Liverpool could drop points against Newcastle.

Arne Slot confirms Liverpool injury scare

That could be even more possible if Liverpool’s latest injury concern turns out to be serious.

Ibrahima Konate suffered an injury at the end of Liverpool’s Champions League win over Real Madrid. The Reds won 2-0, with Kylian Mbappe enduring another torrid European night in the North of England.

But Liverpool’s win may have come at a cost, with Konate visibly in pain after the match.

That is not Liverpool’s only injury concern coming out of the game, with Conor Bradley limping off with what looked like a hamstring problem.

After the game, Arne Slot spoke to Liverpool’s official website about the injuries to Konate and Bradley.

“I know where they have pain, but how bad or how good it is difficult to judge so close after the game,” he said.

“This is what happens during a season. We missed Trent [Alexander-Arnold] today, we missed [Diogo] Jota today, we missed Alisson [Becker] today. We didn’t miss Trent because he was on the bench, but he couldn’t play from the start, but Kostas [Tsimikas] we missed.

“This happens through a season. I am really hoping both of them are available to play because we want them all available, but if not someone else has to step up and until now this season everybody that I [have] selected to start has shown up.”

What it could mean for Newcastle United vs Liverpool

Even if the Bradley injury is not massively serious, it feels likely that he will not start at right-back next week against Newcastle.

That is because Trent Alexander-Arnold is fit again, with the England international on the bench for the win over Real Madrid.

The Konate problem would be more of a blow, with Joe Gomez or Jarrell Quansah in line to replace the Frenchman if he is set for an injury layoff.

Either Gomez or Quansah playing at St James’ Park would be very interesting, as both players were linked with moves to Tyneside during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle wanted to include Quansah in the potential Anthony Gordon deal, but they were almost made to settle for Gomez as they scrambled to salvage their PSR position.

Gomez was interested in signing for Newcastle, while a medical was pencilled in ahead of a possible move.

Thankfully for Toon fans, that deal collapsed as Newcastle found another way to comply with PSR.

Now Gomez or Quansah could get the chance to play at St James’ Park, but in the red of Liverpool rather than the black and white of Newcastle. However, that will depend on Konate’s fitness.
