According to the Liverpool Echo, Newcastle could be heading to Anfield for a pre-season friendly.

They claim that the Magpies are in contention to face Liverpool in August ahead of the new Premier League season. Aston Villa are also being considered.

This is set to be another strange pre-season for clubs all over the world.

Friendlies would normally take place all over the globe, used more as marketing exercises than anything else.

We usually see teams going to China, USA, Spain, Germany – all over the place.

But with COVID still reducing international travel, clubs may have to re-think their pre-season plans.

Liverpool had reportedly wanted to play Spanish side Osasuna, but the challenge of bringing a foreign team to England ended those discussions.

So why Newcastle?

The Liverpool Echo state that Jurgen Klopp’s side want to face ‘top level’ opposition before the new Premier League season. So apparently Newcastle are a ‘top level’ team. Who knew?

The reason Newcastle and Aston Villa are being considered is because Liverpool aren’t set to face them in the league until December.

Newcastle’s first game against the Reds in the 2021/22 Premier League season is currently scheduled for December 15th.

The Magpies did well against Liverpool last season, drawing 0-0 at St James’ Park and 1-1 at Anfield, with Joe Willock scoring a dramatic late equaliser.

As it stands, Steve Bruce’s side currently have four friendlies organised for this summer.

We’ve got two games in a day on July 18th, with separate Toon teams set to face York City and Harrogate Town.

On July 27th we head to Rotherham, then three days later we’ll be enjoying Burton away.
