Newcastle United and Liverpool paid tribute to Christian Atsu ahead of Saturday night’s game at St James’ Park.

It was confirmed on Saturday morning that he had been found dead after the horrific earthquake in Turkey more than a week ago.

Atsu had been missing since the disaster on February 6th, with the earthquake causing devastation. More than 45,000 people have lost their lives following the catastrophe in Turkey and Syria.

The 31-year-old had played for Hatayspor the night before, scoring a late free-kick to secure a win for his side. Tragedy then struck, with reports emerging that Atsu was trapped under rubble after a building collapsed.

There was then a raft of misinformation, with claims stating that he had been found. The Ghana FA reported that he had been rescued and was receiving treatment, but that proved to be untrue.

St James’ Park paid tribute to Christian Atsu on Saturday night

Newcastle United vs Liverpool on Saturday night was already an emotional game, with the club paying tribute to Sir Bobby Robson on what would have been his 90th birthday. Wor Flags produced a beautiful display to commemorate an incredible man.

And there was also a pre-match tribute paid to Christian Atsu. The plan was to hold a minute’s silence for the Ghanaian, but it quickly turned into a minute’s applause as supporters showed respect to a fantastic human being.

During the applause, Liverpool fans sang You’ll Never Walk Alone, which was a touch of class from the travelling support.

There were also songs about Atsu throughout the game, as Toon fans chanted his name following the horrific news.

Atsu’s family were in attendance at St James’ Park, with his wife and two children watching the game between Newcastle and Liverpool.

Our thoughts are with Atsu’s family and anyone else affected by the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
