Leicester teammate's comments show why Maddison is perfect for Newcastle

Newcastle United want to sign James Maddison in January, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s comments explain exactly why he is perfect for Eddie Howe’s side.

The Magpies tried to sign him in the summer and failed. Dan Ashworth made two offers for the Leicester midfielder, but failed to reach the Foxes’ £60million asking price.

That meant that Maddison remained at the King Power, but the rumours are continuing. It was recently claimed in the Times that Newcastle will make a fresh move for Maddison in the New Year – if Leicester reduce their asking price.

They might have to do that given his contract situation, but will certainly be reluctant given how well he is playing this season.

His performances are showing exactly what he would bring to Newcastle – goals and assists. But comments from his teammate on what he’s like off the pitch explain why he would fit in well.

Dewsbury-Hall on Maddison

Dewsbury-Hall has been asked about Maddison by the Athletic, and explained how he is heavily influenced by the 25-year-old.

“He [Maddison] definitely keeps you going and he really knows what to say at the right time,” Dewsbury-Hall said.

“He’s really good, not only on the pitch but off it, at putting an arm around you if you aren’t doing so well and saying ‘look, believe you’re a great player,’ or if you are doing well, at keeping you grounded.

“He says, ‘never get too high or too low because you never know what will happen in football’.”

Maddison has the perfect profile for Newcastle

Talent is important, but so is personality. Good characters make a good team, and it is why Newcastle have been so successful since Howe became manager.

Despite the influx of cash, the Magpies have been sensible in the transfer window. We haven’t signed any ‘bad eggs’. Every player we have brought in has been a good fit for the group and a positive influence in the dressing room.

Howe has created a united culture at the club, and one that breeds a winning team.

And Dewsbury-Hall’s comments on Maddison show that he has the character Howe wants. He helps his teammates get better, and tries to bring them up to his level. That’s exactly what we have seen Kieran Trippier do to great effect at Newcastle.

Maddison would be a perfect addition in January. He fills the attacking void that currently exists in our squad. He’s of an age where his best years are still ahead of him and he can grow with the club. And he has the personality to fit in seamlessly at St James’ Park.

Fingers crossed Ashworth can get this deal done in 2023.
