Newcastle United’s assistant manager Graeme Jones wouldn’t be part of any backroom shake-up if the club decided to change managers.

That is the information from Lee Ryder, who has fielded questions in a piece for the Chronicle which went out this morning.

Jones has been with Newcastle since January of this year, having previously been assistant manager to Jason Tindall at Bournemouth.

Many credited Jones for Newcastle’s strong finish to the 2020/21 season.

He then went and worked with the England national team and Gareth Southgate at Euro 2020.

Fans have been piling the pressure on Steve Bruce, with the club yet to win this season.

Despite his struggles, there have been claims his position isn’t under any immediate threat.

But that didn’t stop someone asking journalist Ryder about Jones perhaps replacing Bruce.

He replied: “We’re told that Graeme Jones has assurances that he would not be part of any type of backroom clear-out should Newcastle decide to change boss.

“Jones is certainly popular with the players and you are right on the compensation fees. However, despite him being a number 1 at Luton Town, it’s never easy stepping up from coach to the main man.”

Jones has been a positive addition for Newcastle

There can be no denying that Jones’ arrival at Newcastle has been a positive thing.

Ryder says that Jones is popular with the players, and results did seem to pick up last term after he joined.

It would probably be a good thing if he remained in his role if Bruce did get sacked. As unlikely as that probably is right now.

He would certainly be able to aid any transition period for a new head coach.
