Newcastle United might once again miss out on the chance to see target Dominic Calvert-Lewin up close and personal.

The Magpies face Everton at Goodison Park on Thursday night, just weeks after the two sides met at St James’ Park.

Newcastle triumphed on that night, winning 3-1. And a lot has changed since then.

Eddie Howe’s side are now nine points clear of the relegation zone, while goal difference is the only thing keeping Frank Lampard’s head above water.

The clash at Goodison Park is a huge game – possibly the biggest of the season for Everton. And it’s a game where they might be without their number nine once again.

Calvert-Lewin trains ahead of Newcastle clash

Ahead of the game, Lampard provided a fitness update on some key Everton players, including Calvert-Lewin.

“Dominic trained lightly yesterday (Tuesday) on the back of not feeling great, so we’ll see how he is again this afternoon and then look at the squad tomorrow,” he told Everton’s official website.

That’s a blow for Everton, who need all the help they can get right now. The England striker has had a frustrating season, despite a bright start to the campaign that saw him score three goals in his opening three games.

If Calvert-Lewin isn’t fit for the game against Newcastle, it will be the second time he’s failed to feature against the Magpies since he was linked with a move to St James’ Park. The 25-year-old was on the bench for the recent 3-1 defeat, but didn’t feature.

Toon scouts will want to cast eye over Calvert-Lewin

While Newcastle defenders might be happy at the prospect of not having to deal with Calvert-Lewin, Toon scouts will perhaps be disappointed.

Since the takeover last year, Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a move to St James’ Park. He was first mentioned by the Telegraph in October year, and those rumours continued in January.

With Chris Wood and Callum Wilson both 30, the Newcastle owners may be keen to add a younger striker to the squad over the summer. Calvert-Lewin certainly fits the bill, despite his lack of minutes this season.

If he is passed fit to feature against Newcastle, it will give Everton a boost. But it will also give the Newcastle recruitment team the chance to get a closer look at the man they’re keen to sign.
