Newcastle United came close to losing a star player in January with Kieran Trippier being linked to a move to Bayern Munich.
Trippier had the chance to link back up with England and former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane over in Germany, but Bayern weren’t offering a good enough deal for Newcastle.
Speaking at the North East Football Writers Awards, Trippier shared what Kane had told him when the news emerged that he could be leaving to join Bayern in January.
Trippier says Kane was very professional
Trippier has been one of Newcastle’s most important players over the last two years and a huge part of the reason why they were able to steer away from relegation and towards Champions League football in just 18 months.
After joining when Newcastle were in the bottom three, it was obvious from day one that he had bought into the project and wasn’t just after another payday – he could have gone to most top teams in Europe.
When news emerged that Bayern could be looking to poach him, especially at a time when Newcastle still had a lot of injuries, there was a concern that this could leave them very short at the back.
As soon as Kane saw the news he was keen to find out from his international teammate if it was all true and even had a pop at the weather in Newcastle as he hoped to see Trippier join him in Munich.
On Kane, Trippier said: “I speak to Harry all the time. Harry was texting me, of course. He wasn’t pushing he was just texting, like, ‘Is it true?’ Little things like that.
“Telling me it’s warmer than Newcastle, having a bit of banter. Harry’s a professional. He wouldn’t try and tap me up, as they say, but there was nothing to say really.”

Trippier is fully committed to Newcastle
With the transfer speculation behind him Trippier is keen to continue what he has started with Newcastle and ideally end the season with a bit of silverware as they take on Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter final.
Regardless, it’s set to be a very busy summer window for Newcastle who will look to bring in some more quality players around Trippier to get back amongst Europe’s elite next season.
It’s unclear how much there is to spend but the 33-year-old knew it was a long-term project he was buying into when he first signed and that investment will have been promised to him within the next five years.
Trippier still has some great years to give football with his experience and leadership at the back and with 10 assists already in the Premier League he’s showing no signs that he’s slowing down.
