Kieran Trippier played his part in Newcastle United’s win against Brentford at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.

The Magpies gave themselves all the impetus they needed to enter the final nine Premier League games on a high after securing three points against a lively Brentford side.

An expected Alexander Isak strike and wondergoal from Sandro Tonali moved Newcastle United up to fifth in the league, piling the pressure on Chelsea, who play on Thursday night.

Newcastle are aiming for a top-four finish, but fifth could still be enough thanks to fellow English teams’ positive performances in Europe, which only means good things for UEFA’s coefficient rules.

While there were many positives to take from the 34-year-old’s performance, Eddie Howe expressed concern for Kieran Trippier after coming off with a groin issue in the final minutes of the game.

Trippier has enjoyed more game time in Newcastle’s starting XI as of late due to Lewis Hall’s season-ending injury, which has forced Tino Livramento to operate at left-back.

While Trippier can enjoy the win and recover from his issue, words from the defender in Newcastle’s pre-match programme showed his true qualities as a leader.

Kieran Trippier pays tribute to Jamaal Lascelles after Carabao Cup win

Jamaal Lascelles could leave Newcastle this summer with his contract expiring at the end of the season. However, he can still say that he left his mark on the club after several years as captain before Trippier’s arrival.

The 31-year-old has been missing from Newcastle’s first-team squad since March 2024 after picking up a nasty ACL injury in a win against West Ham United.

Despite the injury, Lascelles lifted the Carabao Cup with Bruno Guimaraes and Trippier in the stands at Wembley, a gesture that Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben loved.

In Newcastle’s matchday programme, Trippier opened up about the experience of lifting a trophy with the Magpies and giving Lascelles his moment.

“I’d lost several cup finals over the course of my career so that made winning this one even more sweeter, and it meant to much to lift the cup with Bruno and Jamaal. That the three of us did it together summed up this group and the ethos this manager has instilled in us.

“Jam was our captain when this club was in a very different place. People may think it was a gesture from myself and Bruno to get Jam up to lift the trophy with us, but I see it differently; for me, it was an honour that Jam let me lift the trophy with him.”

Guimaraes took over as Newcastle captain from Trippier at the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign, but the Brazilian showed his class by including the pair in a moment that will be remembered for decades.

Thomas Frank’s classy Newcastle United tribute after Brentford loss

It was a tough result to take for Brentford boss Thomas Frank, who believed his side should have come out of the game with much more than they got.

Bryan Mbeumo scored a penalty during the game, but Tonali’s winner ensured it meant nothing when Peter Bankes blew the final whistle.

Frank believed Brentford should have had a second penalty when Guimaraes came together with Mikkel Damsgaard inside the penalty area, but Peter Bankes and VAR confirmed there was nothing in it.

As Frank left his post-match press conference, he took the time to pay homage to the Magpies.

The Dane said: “Congratulations on the Carabao Cup win, by the way.”
