Newcastle United will travel to Wembley Stadium on March 16 to take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

The Magpies are looking to win their first piece of silverware since 1969 but must beat a Liverpool side who have looked unstoppable at times this season.

Newcastle United will have to do much better than they did on their trip to Anfield last week, they failed to register a shot on target as Arne Slot’s side secured a 2-0 win.

The game in the Premier League was only a dress rehearsal for the Carabao Cup final, however, Eddie Howe also had to play the game without star striker Alexander Isak who was struggling with a groin issue.

Howe will be without Anthony Gordon in the final after the winger was shown a straight red card in Newcastle’s FA Cup defeat to Brighton on Sunday.

It’s clear that Newcastle have a mountain to climb, but it’s a task they will be willing to complete to bring a trophy back to Tyneside. Kevin Keegan was one of the last managers who came agonisingly close to winning silverware at Newcastle, he has now given his verdict on who he wants to win the final between the two sides.

Kevin Keegan makes Carabao Cup final prediction

Keegan will go down as one of the most important managers in Newcastle’s history, nearly winning the Premier League title in the 1995/96 season.

Things went sour before the end of that season, and Keegan’s famous “I would love it” rant was the tip of the iceberg. Keegan never took Newcastle to a cup final during his two stints at the club as manager, but he still supports them from afar.

Speaking at an event at Gosforth Park Hotel, Keegan was asked who he would like to win the Carabao Cup. Keegan played for both Newcastle and Liverpool, so it was undoubtedly a hard choice for the 74-year-old.

“I was in Liverpool last week working. I got asked who I wanted to win the Carabao Cup, and even though I was in Liverpool, I said Newcastle. Liverpool to win the Premier League and Newcastle to win the Carabao Cup.

“If ever a club deserved to win something, it’s Newcastle. I know they won the Fairs Cup in the 1960s, but then you are going back to the 1950s. It has been too long. You have a team that can take Liverpool on, on their day, if they all play well you never know. Go there in hope and anticipation.” (the Chronicle)

Newcastle fans await Kevin Keegan’s return to St James’ Park

It has been a long time since Newcastle fans have seen Keegan at St James’ Park. He has only returned to the ground once since falling out with former owner Mike Ashley for a leaving do. But now his triumphant return could be very close after plans were revealed earlier this season.

Keegan was set to visit St James’ Park for Newcastle’s Premier League clash against Liverpool in December, but couldn’t make it due to other commitments.

Fan group Wor Flags was keen to see Keegan back at the ground after planning a display for him ahead of the Liverpool game.

However, it was recently revealed that Keegan will return to Newcastle when they win a trophy, a task they are now very close to completing. The fans are desperate to see ‘King Kev’ back in his castle, they may not have long to wait.
