Newcastle United youngster Kell Watts will officially spend the 2021/22 season with Wigan Athletic.

The centre-back yesterday joined the League One outfit on loan.

That was after making a good impression for Newcastle in pre-season.

Steve Bruce recently said how he was privately very pleased with the 21-year-old.

But he will not be challenging for a place in the first-team at St. James’ Park.

Instead he’ll return to League One, the division he played in last year with Plymouth Argyle, whom he did very well with.

Watts made 50 appearances for the Pilgrims for over 4000 minutes of time on the pitch.

Fans reacted to the news of Watts’ departure yesterday, and not everybody was pleased.

Some felt that Watts had shown enough in pre-season to warrant a chance with the first-team.

It could be that the decision to let Watts go, after selling Florian Lejeune, will now pace the way for a new central defender to come into the club.

Watts has since taken to Instagram following his move to the Latics, writing: “Delighted to be joining @laticsofficial a massive club with huge ambitions for the up incoming season. Can’t wait to meet you fans and thank you for the warm welcome already.”

Many fans have wished him well, and there were also messages of support from Toon first-teamers Freddie Woodman, Sean Longstaff and Dwight Gayle:
