The Premier League have announced that Newcastle and other clubs will be able to make five substitutes next season.

Five subs were permitted last season during the height of the pandemic, amid a backlog of fixtures. However, the Premier League reverted back to the traditional three changes for the 2021/22 campaign.

But change is on the horizon once again, and it’s a change that some Newcastle fans might not like.

However, it will delight Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. The Reds boss has been rallying for five substitutes at every given opportunity.

Klopp has got his way, and it could be bad news for Newcastle and the other Premier League clubs outside the ‘big six’.

While Klopp may believe it is for greater good of Premier League clubs, it gives the elite another distinct advantage.

When you have a bench full of stars like Liverpool and Manchester City, making five changes can turn a game on its head. They can change half of their entire outfield team.

Substitutes are there to change the game, but giving clubs five changes takes out the jeopardy. And it simply favours the clubs with the bigger and better squads.

Yes, they play more games and therefore need to rest their players more. But that shouldn’t be our problem, or Burnley’s or Everton’s. It should be up to their manager to rotate accordingly and navigate the fixtures in front of them.

Of course, this is a change that might actually benefit Newcastle in the long run. With increased ambition and finances, a bigger and better squad could be on the horizon at St James’ Park too. Will we be complaining then?

For now though, the big boys have been given an advantage. Klopp will be delighted, but whether his joy is for the betterment of the entire division remains to be seen.
