Football journalist Julien Laurens has given an insight into how much Newcastle United could earn by qualifying for the Champions League.

The Magpies moved closer to Champions League qualification after their 2-0 win against Chelsea on Sunday, where Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe did something he has not needed to for a while.

The Toon boss made two changes to his squad, with Joe Willock and Kieran Trippier missing out due to injury. Howe admitted Willock and Trippier’s seasons could be over, paving the way for players like Anthony Gordon to make their way back into the starting XI.

Additionally, Joelinton’s season is expected to be over due to a lingering knee issue. The injuries mean Howe has been forced to change his starting lineup, something he has barely done all season when his strongest players are available.

Howe needs more bodies to help with next season’s European games. Newcastle have as much as £150m to spend. However, it could end up being much more, according to Julien Laurens.

Julien Laurens anticipates huge Champions League income for Newcastle

“Yeah, I think massively they need the Champions League for the money. Group stages in the new phase of the format of the Champions League plus a play-off space is £60-70m already just that extra money in your budget.

“Attracting the right players, keeping the ones you want, no PSR issues, you don’t have to sell an Anderson for example, you can keep Miley, you can keep Bruno.

“He can keep everyone he wants to keep, and Isak especially because Isak of all of them is the one that has to say ‘I need to play Champions League football, I’m too good not to play Champions League football’. So if they have that they can probably keep him for another season.”

After Sunday’s win, Newcastle are just one win away from confirming a return to the Champions League. Sixth-placed Aston Villa still pose a minor threat to Newcastle, but their goal difference is significantly less than what Howe’s side has managed.

All eyes will be on Sunday’s game against Arsenal, a huge clash at the Emirates Stadium with a lot on the line.

Arsenal are second, but after a run of poor results, they now have Newcastle breathing down their necks. A win for the Magpies would see them leapfrog Mikel Arteta’s side into second, rounding off a truly memorable season.

Even a point would be enough if other results go their way. Villa have to beat Tottenham, while Nottingham Forest face a trip to West Ham in a must-win game for them.
