Miguel Almiron returned quicker than anticipated from a thigh injury, and now has a chance to start against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Newcastle were able to welcome Almiron back to the bench against Aston Villa. He played 34 minutes against Unai Emery’s side, but was unable to inspire a black and white comeback.
It was anticipated that the Paraguayan was going to miss another two weeks of action, so seeing him back in the squad on Sunday was a real boost.
He did provide extra spark down the right, but it was merely an afternoon to forget for Eddie Howe’s side. It was our worst performance of the season – one we must put behind us ahead of the game against Tottenham.
The game at St James’ Park is huge. It will have a massive impact on who finishes in the top four.

That is why Howe will be pondering changes to his side after the Aston Villa disappointment, and the Athletic’s Chris Waugh has stated that Almiron has a chance of starting.
Chris Waugh thinks Miguel Almiron could start vs Tottenham
Speaking on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, Waugh suggested that the 29-year-old could start against Spurs on Sunday.
“He [Almiron] returned two weeks ahead of schedule,” he said.
“I think he has a decent chance of pushing his way back into the XI. Obviously he is still Newcastle’s top goalscorer, very good at leading the press. So that gives an additional option there.”

Miggy was brilliant against Spurs earlier this season
Almiron missed four games due to injury, and it came just at a time when he will have been feeling confident again. He scored the winner against Wolves back in March, but then missed the wins over Forest, Manchester United, West Ham and Brentford.
During that time, Newcastle’s wide options have been a bit of a mixed bag. No one has been particularly consistent during that period, which should increase Almiron’s chances of walking back into the starting lineup.
He will be keen to do just that, especially against a side that he has history with. Almiron was excellent in the win over Tottenham earlier this season, scoring a brilliant solo goal during his remarkable run of form in October.
A similar performance from the Paraguay international would be very welcome, with Howe’s side looking to bounce back from the disappointment of losing to Villa.
