Journalist shares signing Newcastle are most likely to make on deadline day

Newcastle United have had a very busy summer so far with four senior signings, and now transfer deadline day is on the horizon.

The window is about to close, meaning that the Magpies are running out of time to make any more additions to Eddie Howe‘s squad.

More new arrivals feel unlikely, as it has been reported that the entire transfer budget has been used up. Newcastle have spent more than £120million on Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento, while the Lewis Hall deal is going to cost the club a further £28million next summer.

Newcastle have spent a lot of cash, and financial fair play limitations mean that there will likely be no more major additions.

However, journalist Dean Jones has hinted that one more deal could happen before the transfer window slams shut on Friday night.

New number 10 is most likely at Newcastle on deadline day

Jones has spoke to Give Me Sport about Newcastle’s transfer business, and shared something he has heard from behind the scenes at St James’ Park heading into deadline day.

“I checked this out with a couple of good Newcastle contacts, and it seems to me that a number 10 is the most likely one if they actually get something done,” he said.

“So, it’s probably a little bit of a surprise considering when you look at the squad overall. But yeah, that’s where I’m told they are likely to look anywhere at all this stage. It’s not a guarantee that they do.”

That would be a major surprise

Jones reckons that Newcastle are most likely to get a number 10 or an attacking midfielder if they sign anyone on deadline day, which coincides with rumours linking us with Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe.

However, it would be a major surprise if Newcastle do pull off a deal like that. It is obviously a position the Magpies want to improve in after targeting James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai, but it is clearly not a priority.

If a deal is to happen, it would surely have to be a loan. And perhaps that is more attainable than a centre-back, which feels like it should be the position that Newcastle are prioritising for their next signing.

In truth, it would be a huge shock if Newcastle make any new signings at all on deadline day, regardless of the position.
