Journalist says there’s something Eddie Howe can do at Newcastle which could save his job

Eddie Howe has come under a lot of pressure lately as Newcastle United look like they could be heading for a mid-table finish.

A heavy defeat to Arsenal at the weekend has meant that Newcastle now sit 10th in the Premier League and out of any of the European positions, so naturally questions are being asked about Howe’s job.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Dean Jones believes winning the FA Cup is the one thing that would secure Howe’s place as manager at Newcastle going into next season.

What Howe can do to save his Newcastle job

Ever since Howe took the Newcastle job he’s been constantly criticised for not being a proven winner and that they would need to hire someone like Jose Mourinho if they were ever going to win a trophy.

Newcastle came very close to proving that wrong last year as they reached the Carabao Cup final, their first final in 20 years, and Howe will be hoping to go one step further this year in the FA Cup.

Blackburn Rovers are all that stand in the way of Newcastle booking their spot in the quarter finals and being just one win away from another trip to the capital, though this time for a semi-final.

If the 46-year-old could lead this team to their first domestic trophy since 1955 there is absolutely no doubt his job would be safe for next season regardless of if they finish sixth or 15th in the league.

On Howe, Jones said: “It’s really now all about the FA Cup and the FA Cup this season could save Eddie Howe’s job. If he wins that competition, he stays in charge for next season, no doubt about it. If he doesn’t win the FA Cup and Newcastle are still towards mid-table and they’re not in Europe next season, I’m not sure he can stay any longer because this is just simply not what the ownership have in mind. They’ve got their eyes on the biggest prizes in football.”

Howe still has a lot of support from Newcastle

While the media would have you believe that the pressure is really on Howe to succeed as the owners are ready and waiting to pull the trigger, Newcastle are fully behind him this season.

The owners can very much appreciate that the former Bournemouth man has had a difficult year with injuries, extra Champions League fixtures and just pure bad luck at times.

However, should that continue into the new season it’s not clear how much time Howe would have before the owners finally decide that there is somebody out there who could be doing a better job.

For the time being, though, it’s difficult to see which managers are currently available who could have done more with the same resources that Howe currently has at his disposal.
