This morning it was announced that Newcastle United had tied down Bruno Guimaraes with a new contract that runs to 2028.

The contract was also said to have contained a release clause of £100million, meaning, for the uninitiated, that if a club were to bid £100million for Bruno Guimaraes, Newcastle would have to accept.

It’s a scary prospect when you look at it like that, but there’s a lot more that goes into these release clauses than what we usually get to read about.

A release clause isn’t the end of the world

There could be certain criteria that needs to be met before the clause becomes active, it could be a timed thing, only active for one week in the transfer window in 2027, who knows?

On top of that, there’s the fact that just because the club must accept the bid, the player still has the choice to stay put, so Bruno Guimaraes does not have one foot out of the door as the meltdown on social media would have you believe.

Interestingly though, Craig Hope has posted on X that the deal has not actually been signed, and also that the release clause is in excess of £100million, that leaves it pretty wide open to be anything really.

I’d be more concerned that the agreement is only verbal over the fact that it contains a release clause. However I’m sure that it’s just a formality at this point.

Newcastle tying down Bruno Guimaraes is a huge statement

Tying down a player like Bruno Guimaraes until 2028 is a massive move by the club.

Bruno has been a key figure for Eddie Howe since he arrived and the goal has always seemed to be to build the squad around him.

Now that he’s potentially here until he turns 30 is a huge coup by the club and that squad building continues with their original focal point still in place.
