Journalist details how Newcastle will approach January transfer window

Newcastle United could be busy once again during the January transfer window, but will have a measured approach to bringing in new players.

The Magpies have experienced two transfer windows so far since the change of ownership, and they both have been very exciting.

January 2022 was a whirlwind that eventually ended with Newcastle making the signings needed for survival. Summer 2022 saw more progress, with big investments made on the likes of Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.

The Toon owners have spent more than £200million so far on signings, and could continue to splash the cash in January. However, they will do what they have always done since buying the club, and that means acting with caution.

Amanda Staveley and co have been sensible with their spending so far. Big money has been spent, but it has been spent wisely. We haven’t witnessed any panic buys, which would have been an easy mistake to make.

And as Newcastle prepare for the January window, they are once again looking to be active if possible.

Waugh shares how Newcastle plan to operate in January

On the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, The Athletic’s Chris Waugh discussed Newcastle’s January approach.

“Everyone I’m speaking to at the moment, the suggestion going into January is that Newcastle, as they have done the last couple of windows, are looking to be flexible,” Waugh said.

“They are not going in thinking ‘we have to do x, y, and z’, but they would like to do certain things. And if they can, they will look to strengthen the squad here and there.

“We know Eddie Howe still wants a right-sided forward and he wants a midfielder. They’re the two priority positions at the moment.”

Waugh went on to add: “If they think ‘we can add one or two players here’ and really can get into Europe and the right players are available, Newcastle, I am confident, will go and do it. It’s not going to be for a lack of ambition. They will also not act for the sake of acting.”

Big signing could propel Newcastle into Europe

If Newcastle continue their bright start to the season, there is a very real chance they could qualify for Europe. And perhaps one or two signings in January could push us towards that goal.

It has been reported that Toon officials hope PIF will be encouraged to spend again if Europe is a possibility. And if that is the case, there are plenty of exciting names who have been linked with moves to St James’ Park.

James Maddison is reportedly the club’s top target, while Youri Tielemans has also been linked. Both players would be very welcome on Tyneside.

However, a move will only happen at the right price. The Toon owners have proved that they will not pay over the odds. They are willing to bide their time to get their top targets for a fair price.

As Waugh says, ambition will not be what holds Newcastle back in January. The only thing that will stop them being active is player availability and willing sellers.
